Becoming Steve Jobs

Becoming Steve Jobs

by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli

Becoming Steve Jobs is an unauthorised biography of Steve Jobs by the journalists Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli, published in 2015. Its organising argument is developmental: that the familiar portrait of Jobs as a fixed and difficult genius misses the thing that actually matters about his career, which is how much he changed between his ejection from Apple in the mid nineteen eighties and his return to it a decade later. The authors trace the years at NeXT and Pixar as the period in which Jobs learned to run a company, to work with people he could not simply overrule, and to pick his fights, and they read the second Apple period as the result. Schlender had interviewed Jobs repeatedly over about twenty five years as a technology reporter, and much of the book's material is drawn from that long acquaintance together with interviews with colleagues, among them senior Apple executives who spoke to the authors on the record.
