Just Work

Just Work is Kim Scott's book on bias, prejudice and bullying at work, published in 2021. It is the successor to her earlier book on management and applies the same practitioner method, which is to build a small vocabulary and then work through what different people in a situation can do with it. Scott separates the three problems by the state of mind behind them. Bias is not meant, and the response to it is to interrupt it. Prejudice is meant and is a belief the person holds, and the response is to confront it. Bullying is deliberate harm and is met by demanding that it stop. The book then sets out roles, addressing itself in turn to the person harmed, to the observer, to the person who caused the harm and to the leader who is responsible for the system, on the argument that advice aimed at everyone at once leaves the burden with whoever is already carrying it. Its evidence base is the author's own career and the accounts of people she worked with.
