Principles: Life and Work

Principles: Life and Work

by Ray Dalio

Principles: Life and Work is Ray Dalio's 2017 book setting out the rules he developed while running the investment firm Bridgewater Associates. It is organised in three parts: an autobiographical account of his career and of the losses that changed how he worked, a set of life principles, and a set of work principles. The life principles are built around what Dalio calls an idea meritocracy, reached through radical truth and radical transparency, and around treating pain plus reflection as the ordinary route to progress. The work principles describe the practices he built at the firm to make that operate, including believability weighted decision making, recorded meetings and continuous documented feedback. The New York Times has reported that Bridgewater staff were involved in writing the book. It is a practitioner's account of a method he devised and used rather than a research literature, and the firm's culture it describes is contested.
