Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs

by Walter Isaacson

Walter Isaacson's authorised biography of the Apple co-founder was published by Simon and Schuster on 24 October 2011, nineteen days after its subject died. Jobs asked Isaacson to write it, and Isaacson, who had previously written lives of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, was given what the source calls unprecedented access. The book rests on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years, together with interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, colleagues, competitors and adversaries, and the source records that Jobs encouraged those people to speak honestly. Jobs asked for no control over the content beyond the cover and waived the right to read it before publication. Isaacson has said he tried to take a balanced view of the man. Its forty-two chapters run from the adoption and the Californian childhood through the founding of Apple, the Macintosh, the departure in 1985, NeXT and Pixar, the return to Apple, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad, to the illness and the death. Reception was mixed among those closest to Jobs, with Tim Cook and Jony Ive both objecting publicly to the portrait, while the book sold more than three million copies in the United States by 2015.
