The Secret

The Secret

by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret is Rhonda Byrne's 2006 self help book, published alongside a film of the same name. Its claim is that a law of attraction governs events, that thoughts are a kind of transmission which draws matching circumstances towards the thinker, and that a person can therefore obtain wealth, health and relationships by holding the right thoughts and feelings about them. The method the book gives is to ask, to believe and to receive, with gratitude and visualisation as the main practices. Byrne presents the idea as ancient knowledge suppressed or lost and recovered by a line of teachers, and the book is built largely from contributions by the figures who also appear in the film. It sold in very large numbers. It is not a scientific work, the law it asserts has no support in the research literature, and its implication that illness and misfortune follow from the sufferer's own thinking has been the main ground of criticism against it.
