Trillion Dollar Coach

Trillion Dollar Coach

by Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg and Alan Eagle

Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg and Alan Eagle, the authors of How Google Works, published this in 2019, subtitled The Leadership Playbook of Silicon Valley's Bill Campbell. It is a management book built from the practice of one man. Campbell, who died in 2016, came to business late and sideways: he played and then coached American football at Columbia, where he was head coach in the 1970s, before moving into advertising, then Kodak, then Apple as vice president of marketing under John Sculley, then the leadership of Claris, GO Corporation and Intuit. He spent the last two decades of his life advising and mentoring the people running the largest technology companies in the world, among them Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt and Sundar Pichai at Google, Steve Jobs at Apple, Jeff Bezos at Amazon, Jack Dorsey and Dick Costolo at Twitter and Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, and he chaired the board of trustees at Columbia. The publisher's own framing is that Campbell's mentoring helped create well over a trillion dollars in market value, which is where the title comes from, and that the book sets out the management lessons of that coaching. For the vault it is also one of the two Reading List titles in Build with a personal relationship behind it.
