Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome, often shortened to PCOS, is a common hormonal condition. The World Health Organization's fact sheet, dated 22 January 2026, estimates that it affects 10 to 13 per cent of women of reproductive age, and that up to 70 per cent of affected women worldwide do not know they have it.
What it is
On this site PCOS appears as an example of how women's health can be missed even inside the reproductive area that research has traditionally focused on. The WHO's estimates are the figures used here. The condition's definition, diagnosis and management are clinical questions, set out by bodies such as the WHO, and this page does not summarise them.
In effect
A condition that affects an estimated 10 to 13 per cent of women of reproductive age, and that up to 70 per cent of them do not know they have, shows the scale of the gap between how common a women's health condition is and how well it is identified. The January 2024 report on the women's health gap by the World Economic Forum and the McKinsey Health Institute argues more generally that women's health is often simplified to sexual and reproductive health, which it says "meaningfully underrepresents women's health burden". PCOS shows that even conditions inside that definition are under-recognised.
It also matters for the wellness market. A market that sells hormonal explanations for everyday feelings can blur the line between ordinary variation and a condition that needs proper assessment. The more women attribute symptoms to hormones in general, the harder it may be to tell which symptoms point to a specific condition such as PCOS, a concern this site raises as a judgement rather than a tested finding.
What it does not say
The WHO figures are estimates, and the share of a condition that goes undiagnosed is by nature hard to count. This page gives no guidance on symptoms, diagnosis, medicines, supplements or treatment. Anyone with concerns should speak to a qualified professional.
