Key ideas

The paper compares four label background colours on identical 400 gram packs of organic pasta: white, blue, green and black. Black scored highest for premiumness on a seven-point scale (4.92) and drew the highest mean bid (570.87 Hungarian forints), while the other three colours sat within about six forints of each other on bids.

Green led on trust and sustainability, and the four colours were close on healthiness. Premiumness and trust both predicted what participants were willing to pay, which ties the premium rating to behaviour in the auction and not only to opinion.

The authors acknowledge that the sample is small and limited to Hungarian university students, and that brightness and saturation were not controlled. The result is a measured premium rating for a black label in one product, under those conditions.
