Claudia Dalbert

Claudia Dalbert is the author of the 1999 Social Justice Research paper that separated the personal belief that the world is just for me from the general belief that the world is just, using a Personal Belief in a Just World scale.

Who they are

This page is thin by design. The material consulted for this publication is the abstract and bibliographic record of the 1999 paper. It establishes authorship and the paper's findings, and it does not establish her affiliation, career or wider body of work. None of that is claimed here.

The paper reports four questionnaire studies and one experiment on the scale's validity. Participant numbers for the studies were not available in the material consulted.

Key ideas

The central finding is that personal belief could be reliably distinguished from general belief, and that people endorsed the personal version more strongly. Personal belief also predicted self-esteem and well-being questionnaire scores after general belief and favourable self-perceptions were taken into account. Dalbert read just-world beliefs as both world views and a personal contract between a person and the social world. See Personal Belief in a Just World and Belief in a Just World.
