Key papers
Parent-based treatment as efficacious as cognitive-behavioral therapy for childhood anxiety (2020), with Marin, Martino, Shimshoni and Silverman. The trial randomly assigned 124 children aged seven to 14 with primary anxiety disorders either to Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions, known as SPACE, in which only the parents were seen, or to cognitive behavioural therapy for the child with no parent treatment. SPACE aims to reduce family accommodation. It was noninferior to the therapy on primary and secondary anxiety outcomes, as rated by independent evaluators, parents and children. Family accommodation and parenting stress fell in both groups, and accommodation fell more after SPACE.
Key ideas
The work rests on the concept of family accommodation, the ways parents adapt their own behaviour to reduce a child's anxiety-related distress. A 2015 review by K. R. Norman, Wendy Silverman and Lebowitz describes accommodation as common in childhood anxiety and associated with a worse course and greater caregiver burden. The trial concerns children with diagnosed anxiety disorders and does not address everyday parenting.
