Elise van den Hoven

Elise van den Hoven is a researcher and first author of the 2008 review that applies theories of autobiographical memory to the design of memory aids.

Who they are

With Berry Eggen, van den Hoven reviewed how thinking about memory moved from a library picture, in which a life is stored and replayed, to a constructive view in which memories are rebuilt and often triggered by cues. The review looks at existing augmented memory systems and offers eight design recommendations.

The article on souvenirs draws on the review for the idea that a simple object can serve as a cue.

Key ideas

Memories are often rebuilt from cues, not replayed whole.
