What the 2023 paper proposed
The paper proposes that sharing of misinformation is driven in large part by habits formed through reward learning, in which people learn to share content that attracts attention and cues in the setting then trigger the response automatically. It sets this against two common explanations, weak critical reasoning and bias. The authors conclude that the sharing structure of social media can be designed to build habits of sharing accurate information.
The idea is catalogued on this site as Habitual Sharing.
