Jonathan C. Pettibone

Cognitive psychologist whose 2012 study found that both the decoy effect and the compromise effect grew larger as time pressure increased.

Who they are

Jonathan C. Pettibone is professor of psychology and undergraduate program director at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. His university biography gives a PhD in experimental psychology with a cognate in quantitative methods from the University of South Carolina (2000) and a BA in psychology from The College of Wooster (1995). His specialisation is cognitive psychology, and the biography describes his research as the cognitive processes that shape preferences for consumer and social stimuli, with a focus on how context influences the construction of preference. The decoy study is a direct case of that interest, since a decoy is a piece of context that changes what people choose.

Key ideas

Time allowed for the decision was varied across four levels.

According to the abstract, both the asymmetric dominance effect and the compromise effect were larger as time pressure increased.

Short time to decide did not remove either effect.
