Joseph Syroit

Co-author of the 1997 field test of severity of initiation in real Dutch groups. This site has verified the paper, and nothing else about him.
Who they are
Joseph E. M. M. Syroit is the second author of Lodewijkx and Syroit (1997), published in the European Journal of Social Psychology. The record at Crossref gives his name in full, and the authors' affiliations are blank there. The paper reports two longitudinal studies of real groups in the Netherlands, with 202 and 46 participants. Path analyses supported only the competing account, that companionship predicts how attractive a group seems irrespective of severity. Severity early in the initiation went with frustration and loneliness in one study and depressed mood in the other, and those feelings lowered liking for the group.
The name is taken from the Crossref record of the paper. No affiliation or other work has been verified, so the page stays short.

Key ideas
The paper tests the laboratory finding outside the laboratory, in groups that existed anyway, and does not support it. It sits beside Hein Lodewijkx's page and the concept page for Effort Justification.
