Key papers

Does gamification work? A literature review of empirical studies on gamification (2014), with two co-authors. The review collected 24 peer-reviewed empirical studies of gamification. Most reported some positive result, chiefly in engagement, enjoyment, motivation and the use of a service. The review found that the size of the effect depended on the context and on the users, and that services built around strictly rational tasks seemed harder to gamify.

Key ideas

The review set out the question that later work on gamification kept returning to: not whether it works in general, but for which outcomes, in which settings and for which users. It also listed limits in the evidence of its time, including small samples, few validated measures, experiments without control groups, several game elements tested together and short study periods in which novelty may have played a part.
