Key papers

Pervasive negative effects of rewards on intrinsic motivation: the myth continues (2001), with Cameron and Pierce. Rewards for low-interest tasks increased free-choice intrinsic motivation. On high-interest tasks, negative effects appeared when rewards were tangible, expected and loosely tied to level of performance.

Key ideas

The central idea is that whether a reward helps or harms depends on the task and the reward. A stamp card for a routine purchase is the low-interest case, where reward helps. Payment for something people already enjoy, given regardless of how well they do it, is the case where harm appears.
