Key papers
The gamification of learning: a meta-analysis (2020), with Michael Sailer. The authors pooled studies of gamification in learning with random-effects models and sorted the outcomes into cognitive, motivational and behavioural. They report small positive effects on all three. Game fiction and social interaction were associated with behavioural outcomes, and combining competition with collaboration appeared helpful for behavioural and motivational outcomes.
Key ideas
The paper concludes that gamification can be an effective instructional method, while noting that what makes it succeed remains unclear, particularly for cognitive outcomes. It is a pooled view that complements single-element experiments such as those by Sailer and colleagues in 2017 and Elisa Mekler and colleagues in 2017.
