Key papers
The relationship between group cohesion, group norms, and perceived social loafing in soccer teams (2006), Small Group Research, 37(3), 217-232. The paper reports a questionnaire study of 118 junior-league soccer players in Norway, covering two forms of cohesion (attraction to the team's task and bonds among members), three team norms (productivity, role commitment and mutual support) and perceived social loafing.
Key ideas
The paper reported that every cohesion and norm measure went with lower perceived social loafing, that attraction to the task and productivity and social-support norms were significant predictors, and that a three-way interaction among task cohesion, social cohesion and performance norms emerged. Perceived loafing was highest in teams with high social cohesion, low task cohesion and weak norms. The data are self-reported and correlational, and they concern perceived rather than measured effort.
