Key papers

Exposure effects in the classroom: The development of affinity among students (1992). The paper appeared in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Women working with the researchers attended a large university lecture class five, ten or fifteen times over a term, and some did not attend at all. At the end of the term students rated photographs of the women. The more often a woman had attended, the more she was liked.

Key ideas

The study applies the idea that familiarity builds liking to people met in an everyday setting. The women in the study did nothing to be liked beyond being present, and the attendance count was set by the researchers, which makes the result a test of exposure and not of personal qualities.
