Key papers

The benefits of turn-taking reciprocal self-disclosure in get-acquainted interactions (2015), Sprecher and Treger. Pairs who alternated their disclosures reported more attraction than pairs who disclosed one after the other, especially after the first interaction, with responsiveness, enjoyment and a sense of being liked helping to explain the difference.

Key ideas

The central idea is that disclosure works as an exchange. Taking turns gives each person evidence that the other is listening and responding, and that evidence is part of what builds liking.
