Do streaks build habits?

Streaks bring people back day after day and can start habits: Duolingo reports that learners on a 7-day streak were 2.4 times as likely to return the next day. But studies show that when a streak breaks, people become less likely to continue, especially if they blame themselves. Whether streak habits outlast the streak has not been tested.

What the report found

  1. Streaks work at scale. Duolingo reports that more than 10 million of its users have kept a learning streak for over a year, and that learners on a 7-day streak were 2.4 times as likely to return the next day.
  2. A broken streak can end a habit. Across seven studies, people were more likely to continue a behaviour when an intact streak was shown, and less likely after a break, especially when they blamed themselves.
  3. A chance to repair helps. The drop after a broken streak was smaller when people could repair it.
  4. Gamification has small average effects. A review of learning studies found small positive effects, and a large trial found that game elements with competition raised daily steps.
  5. But it can backfire. In one classroom study, a gamified course led to lower motivation, satisfaction and exam scores than the same course without game elements.

How we work

Frontier Reports look at behaviour the textbooks have not yet caught up with. Every claim is graded Established, Emerging or Untested. Where researchers disagree, as they do on whether streaks build lasting habits, both sides are set out before we say where we stand.
