What does starting a first job do to the mind?

A first job tests confidence, relationships and money habits at once. Newcomers settle best when their role is clear, their confidence grows and colleagues accept them, and early support matters most. Satisfaction tends to peak soon after starting and then settle, which is normal. Saving from the first salary works best as a default: in one company, automatic enrolment raised participation from 37 to 86 per cent.

What the report found

  1. The UAE is opening careers at scale. By October 2025, 154,000 Emiratis worked in the private sector, 136,000 of whom had joined since Nafis began in 2021. Nafis now runs to 2040.
  2. Clear rules frame the first months. UAE labour law caps probation at six months, with clear notice periods on both sides, and unemployment insurance covers more than nine million subscribers.
  3. The first ninety days set the course. A review of 70 samples of newcomers found that role clarity, confidence and social acceptance link good onboarding to satisfaction, performance and staying.
  4. The early high settles, and that is normal. Job satisfaction tends to peak soon after starting and then ease. Mentoring and early support carry newcomers through, and imposter feelings can come with real interpersonal strengths.
  5. The first salary sets habits. When saving was made the default for new employees at one large company, participation rose from 37 to 86 per cent. Workplace savings in the UAE are growing fast.

How we work

Moment Reports look at how people think and decide at particular points in the year or in life, starting with the UAE and then the wider Gulf. Every claim is graded Established, Emerging or Untested, and where researchers disagree, both sides are set out before we say where we stand.
