External search effort: An investigation across several product categories
Beatty and Smith examine external search effort across five consumer electronics products, using an involvement perspective and an interaction framework of decision making. Purchase involvement, attitudes toward shopping, time availability and product class knowledge each related to total search effort; ego involvement was not significant. The antecedents also affected the separate indices of retailer, media, interpersonal and neutral search. Journal of Consumer Research 14(1), 1987; authors Sharon E. Beatty and Scott M. Smith.
