Boltz, Schulkind and Kantra, Memory and Cognition 19(6), 1991, 593-606. Background music in films was used to examine schematic processing. Music matching a scene's outcome mood and played with it aided remembering, music played before a scene and clashing with its mood also aided remembering, and unrecalled scenes were recognised when cued by their music. The authors attribute the effects to differently directed selective attention.
