Adrenaline junkies and white-knucklers: A quantitative study of fear management in haunted house visitors
Clasen, Andersen and Schjoedt, Poetics 73, 2019, 61-71. Haunted house visitors were asked to maximise or minimise their fear (thrill-seekers and fear-avoiders); interviews and questionnaires. Both groups used antecedent and response-focused strategies (cognitive, behavioural, social), thrill-seekers also used some heightening strategies, thrill-seekers reported stronger fear, and enjoyment was similar across groups.
