Bandwagoning and underdogging on North-American free trade: A quasi-experimental panel study of opinion movement
Edouard Cloutier, Richard Nadeau and Jean Guay track student groups' opinions on North American free trade over time in a quasi-experimental panel design. Exposure to majority opinion trends produced both bandwagon and underdog effects. After controlling for non-causal factors, the authors attribute the effects partly to the stimuli and partly to people's efforts to keep their opinions internally consistent, and the paper also discusses methods for measuring opinion movement.
