Changes in drivers

Fujii (2001) ยท Environment and Behaviour

Fujii, Garling and Kitamura investigate how cooperation can be facilitated in a real-world social dilemma, the choice to commute by car rather than public transport. They surveyed drivers before and during a temporary freeway closure of about a week in Osaka, Japan. The frequency of switching to public transport during the closure was inversely related to how often drivers commuted by car before it. Frequent car commuters overestimated public transport commuting time more than others, and the larger the overestimate, the more likely drivers were to change their perception of it.
