Neural basis of the undermining effect of monetary reward on intrinsic motivation
Murayama, Matsumoto, Izuma and Matsumoto used functional brain imaging to examine how performance-based monetary reward affects intrinsic motivation. They report that such reward undermined intrinsic motivation and that activity in the anterior striatum and prefrontal areas decreased along with the effect, which they attribute to the brain's valuation system. Nothing beyond the abstract is used.
