RETRACTED ARTICLE: High replicability of newly discovered social-behavioural findings is achievable

Protzko (2024) · Nature Human Behaviour · Read the paper

This paper reported an unusually encouraging result. Four coordinated laboratories tested sixteen newly discovered social and behavioural effects using rigour-enhancing practices throughout: confirmatory rather than exploratory tests, large samples, registration of the analysis in advance and full methodological transparency. Where earlier replication projects had found around half of published findings holding up, this project reported around eighty-six per cent, with replicated effects almost the same size as the originals. The conclusion drawn was that the replication problem is a problem of method rather than of the phenomena, and that rigorous practice largely solves it. One fact belongs on this page and governs how it may be used. The article has been retracted. A published critique argued that the analysis did not support the claim, and this vault should treat the finding as withdrawn rather than contested. It is kept here because the claim circulated widely before the retraction, and a reader meeting it elsewhere needs to know.
