Things learned in early adulthood are remembered best
Rubin and colleagues document the reminiscence bump. When older adults recall their lives, memories cluster disproportionately in the years between roughly ten and thirty: the most memories, the most vivid ones and the ones judged most important. The same window supplies people's favourite films, music and books, and the world events they consider most significant. The authors then went further than self-report, testing factual knowledge about the Academy Awards, the World Series and current affairs across different periods, with two separate groups of thirty older adults tested a decade apart. Accuracy was higher for material from that same early-adult window. So the effect is not only about what feels important in hindsight; the knowledge itself is better retained. The paper considers explanations based on the density of life transitions in that period alongside several non-cognitive accounts. This vault cites it on why taste and conviction form when they do.

The link below is the right work, with one detail that does not line up. The citation names a body of work rather than one paper. This is the canonical reminiscence-bump study by the same author. Worth opening before quoting a figure from it.
