Ruiz Pardo and Minda report a pre-registered direct replication of the second experiment by Ward and colleagues on smartphones and cognition. Smartphone location, on the desk, in a pocket or bag, or outside the room, and smartphone power, on or off, were varied across six conditions. Participants completed an automated operation span task, a cue-dependent go/no-go task and an inventory of smartphone attachment and dependency. The hypothesis was that attention-demanding performance would be worse with the phone closer, especially for those with greater attachment.
