The when and how of planning: Meta-analysis of the scope and components of implementation intentions in 642 tests

Sheeran, Listrom and Gollwitzer analyse 642 tests. The sample-weighted average effect size is 0.36. Funnel plot inspection and Egger's regression indicated substantial publication bias, a robust Bayesian model found extreme evidence for it, trim-and-fill estimates were 0.35, and the robust Bayesian model-averaged estimate was 0.15, described as small and highly heterogeneous. The abstract gives effect sizes by outcome type from 0.27 to 0.66. Contingent if-then plans averaged 0.43 and schedule-format plans 0.29. Responses coded as cognitive procedures or ignore responses averaged 0.48 and approach behaviours 0.40. No clear pattern emerged among cue types. The abstract reports larger benefits for strongly motivated participants and rehearsed plans.
