Consequences for road traffic fatalities of the reduction in flying following September 11, 2001

Sivak (2004) · Read the paper

Sivak and Flannagan re-evaluated an earlier estimate of the extra road deaths that followed the reduction in flying after 11 September 2001. Using the trend in road fatalities for January to August of 2000 and 2001 as a baseline, they found a substantially larger increase for the three months in question. Most of the rise was on local roads, which argues against a simple shift from flying to driving to the same destinations, and pedestrians and cyclists accounted for a disproportionate share.
