A specific role for posterior dorsolateral striatum in human habit learning
Tricomi, Balleine and O'Doherty trained 32 adults on a free-operant button-pressing task for snack-food rewards signalled by fractal images, with one group given two 8-minute sessions on one day and another given twelve sessions over three days; 16 and 15 were analysed. After selective satiation on one food, the one-day group responded less to the cue for the devalued food, while the three-day group did not differ between cues. Activity in a right posterior putamen and globus pallidus region increased across training, and the nucleus accumbens response to reward delivery stayed consistent. The authors interpreted the pattern as a shift from goal-directed to habit-based control, with both systems operating at once. Reading depth: full text; figures used are 32 adults, 16 and 15 analysed, two 8-minute sessions, twelve sessions over three days.
