A person-by-situation approach to emotion regulation: Cognitive reappraisal can either help or hurt, depending on the context
Troy, Shallcross and Mauss measured reappraisal ability, stressor severity and stressor controllability in 170 people. They reported that the link between reappraisal ability and how people were faring ran in one direction when the stressor could not be controlled and in the opposite direction when it could. The authors proposed that easing the distress of a fixable problem may remove the motivation to fix it. The design was cross-sectional.
