How Leaders Foster Self-Managing Team Effectiveness: Design Choices Versus Hands-on Coaching
Wageman reports a field study, using several methods, that compares two things leaders do: how they design a team and how they coach it hands-on. Both design and coaching affect how far a team manages itself, the quality of relationships among members and member satisfaction. Only design activities, however, influence how well the team performs its task. The two interact: well-designed teams gain more from effective coaching and lose less from poor coaching than poorly designed teams do.
