Brooding and Reflection Reconsidered: A Factor Analytic Examination of Rumination in Currently Depressed, Formerly Depressed, and Never Depressed Individuals
This paper re-examines the brooding and reflection distinction rather than assuming it. Its design is the useful part: the factor structure of the rumination measure was tested separately in people who were currently depressed, people who had been depressed and recovered, and people who had never been depressed. The question behind that is whether the two components hold as a stable feature of how people think, or whether the structure itself changes with mood, in which case a measure taken during an episode would not mean the same thing as one taken outside it. Research on the two-component split had proceeded largely without checking that. This vault cites it as the caution attached to the brooding and reflection literature, and anything specific taken from it should be traced to the paper itself. Written without an abstract, from the title and from the neighbouring work cited here.
