Krzysztof Budzyń

Krzysztof Budzyń is a gastroenterology researcher. He is the first author of "Endoscopist deskilling risk after exposure to artificial intelligence in colonoscopy: a multicentre, observational study", published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2025, which asked how doctors who had been using AI performed colonoscopy when the AI was switched off.
Who they are
His affiliations on the 2025 paper are the Department of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine, Academy of Silesia, Katowice, Poland, and Endoterapia, H-T Centrum Medyczne, Tychy, Poland. The paper lists twenty co-authors, with Yuichi Mori as the last author.

Key papers
Endoscopist deskilling risk after exposure to artificial intelligence in colonoscopy (2025), with Romańczyk, Kitala and colleagues. The study used four endoscopy centres in Poland taking part in the ACCEPT trial, which introduced AI tools for polyp detection at the end of 2021. It compared standard colonoscopies, done without AI, in the three months before and the three months after the tools arrived. Across 1,443 patients, the adenoma detection rate in non-AI colonoscopies fell from 28.4 per cent before AI exposure to 22.4 per cent after it. In a regression analysis, exposure to AI was one of three factors independently linked to detection, alongside the patient's sex and age. The authors concluded that continuous exposure to AI might reduce detection in standard colonoscopy, suggesting a negative effect on endoscopist behaviour.
Key ideas
The paper is an early measurement of deskilling in a clinical procedure. It is observational, so it cannot prove that the AI caused the fall, but it raises a practical question for any service that uses AI: how well staff perform on the days when the tool is unavailable. The study was widely reported when it appeared in 2025.
