Mindy Weinstein

Mindy Weinstein

Marketing author of The Power of Scarcity (McGraw Hill, 2023), which organises scarcity into four types, supply, limited edition, time and demand, and argues that each should be matched to the motive of the customer.

Who they are

Weinstein's book is written for marketers and treats scarcity as an influence principle rather than an economic condition. Its strongest contribution is the four-type split, and its best chapter is the one on persuasion knowledge, where the external evidence is stronger than the book's own presentation. At page 37 it revises its own explanation of a time-pressure effect after reporting researchers who were not confident the effect existed, which is unusual in the genre.

Match the type of scarcity to the customer's motive. See The Four Types of Scarcity.

A product scarce because it is popular works against the wish to be different. See Scarcity Effect.
