Christine Rosen

Writer and cultural critic, author of The Extinction of Experience (2024), which argues that mediated life replaces direct experience: we now relate to the world "through information about it rather than direct experience with it".
Who they are
Rosen writes cultural criticism rather than a review of evidence, setting everyday practices beside literary, philosophical and sociological texts. Her book's distinctive chapters are on the face, the hand and public space. She credits the phrase in her title to the naturalist Robert Michael Pyle, and at page 45 concedes that large-scale studies of the long-term effects of mediated relationships on children are not yet available.

Key ideas
Mediated experience replaces practices such as waiting, handwriting and reading a face across a table; whether that is a loss is a question of value that no study can settle. See The Causal Reversal Thesis for the account it is usually set against.
